My Father-In-Law's(Peter Paul Panigiris,God rest his soul) sisters were on the boat, who one of them (Despina Mavrou, nee Panigiris) to this day lives with her family on Castellorizo. The other sister (Elizabeth Fountas nee Panigiris) lives in Adelaide South Australia. Thea Elisabeth left her 6 week old baby on the burning boat, as she gave up on trying to get through the flames and black smoke. In seeing this, her sister Despina immersed herself in water and went back to look for the baby, She found him (a boy named Paul who lives in South Australia with his own family) and put him in the front part of her dress lifting it up and clenching it with her teeth to form a pouch. they were saved, and I've heard this story many times in my 30 year marriage to my husband George Peter Panigiris. I find listening eagerly everytime that story is told (being from Cazzie descent myself, my grandparents were Eleutherios Amigdalos and Despina Karpathio), with sadness for the lives lost, but with admiration for such a strong woman as Thea Despo.

My grandfather, Mervyn Llewellyn Mather, served as Chief Engineer on MV Empire Patrol in the period before the disastrous passage.

Special thanks for all the effort that has been made to document this tragic event in Kastellorizo's history.

My late aunty Chrysanthi (Agapito)Fermanis perished in this tragedy at the tender age of appx 5 years old.
My mother and her living and deceased siblings have endured this heartache their whole life and it has had a profound effect on all of them especially their late Mother Eipivi who was forever depressed until she also passed away in her early 50's.

Dear Dr Paul Boyatzis, Allan Cresswell, Nicholas Pappas - Congratulations to you all and all your team for providing such historical data. My grandmother and great great mother were on board and perished. I always wanted to know what really had happened and you have provided me with all the links to my family. My father Paraskos Exintari was in tears today reading rhia. It was a beautiful father days present for him to remember his mum and his family. Thank you so much for providing a photo of my grandmother. I will copy and try to get it reconstructed in some way. Thank you once again.

This is such a moving story. I have just come back from Kastellorizo and found it so beautiful. I can feel for those who come home and found their homeland not as they left it. For the 33 who died words can not express my sorrow.

The story is one that most Kastellorizians will remember by word of mouth from family members who experienced the disaster. With your impeccable website, new generations of Kastellorizians will perpetuate the memory.

As a survivor of the disaster, our Mum (Glikeria Stavrou nee Athanasiou) God rest her blesséd soul, would have been impressed and proud to know that the story lives on.

Congratulations!!! My dad (Constantine Houlis) was on Empire Patrol (he was seven years old at that time). I will immediately inform him about this website. Even though it wasn't me at the disaster, I teared as if it was me, because of the the life story told to me from my dad. Thank you for keeping alive and remembering all those. It is an important part of the island of Kastellorizo.

Congratulations to all those involved (Dr Paul Boyatzis, Allan Cresswell, Nicholas Pappas)in creating such a comprehensive account of the Empire Patrol tragedy. The historical information is important for all to know and the moving stories of the people who survived adds to the power of the story. My paternal grandmother, Maria Tsolakis, after whom I was named, was also on the boat. Unfortunately, she is no longer alive to tell her story. That's why these stories help me to understand what she went through at the time. She was travelling with her son Anastasi, daughter Marou and granddaughters, Marianthi & Rosa. Thank you for providing such a wonderful resource. It reinforces the need for the unveiling of the Empire Patrol monument on Kastellorizo later this year.

Congratulations Allan Cresswell and Paul Boyatzis - what a moving website!

On behalf of those of us who were not born at the time, yet were so affected by the Empire Patrol disaster, in one way or another by the tragedy it brought to our families – THANK YOU.

I would like to express my personal thanks and gratitude to Allan Cresswell for his diligence, in seeing this mammoth task come to fruition. I am named after my sister – Evdokia Koutsoukos – aged 8 years, who perished on the day of the Navagio.

Allan has met with and interviewed many of the survivors of the ill fated Empire Patrol, and we the ‘emotional survivors’ of this disaster, would like to thank him for the many thousands of unpaid hours he has put into this huge, huge project, so we may have some history to pass on to our grandchildren.

Please contact the website with even the smallest bit of history you have, or have had passed down to you, so our descendants may have some knowledge of our perished loved ones. May their memories be eternal.
